Since last Fall, the CVRS has been working with 2Web, a website design and application company based in Saskatoon, to give the CVRS website a brand-new look, and to undertake a complete re-write of the underlying website code. The new-look website will maintain similar features and facilities as the current one, but has a simplified layout, larger text, works well with mobile devices, and solves several of the legacy background maintenance and functionality issues that were frustrating the CVRS webmasters.
We plan to launch the new website during the next weeks so tune back in soon to try it out! Although we have been hard at work function-testing the new website in the background, it is of course possible that there are some bugs still lurking in there. If you find any, or have any comments and suggestions regarding the new website (and forums), please contact our webmaster, Les Dickson, at ‘webmaster at canadianvintageradio dot com’
The Winter 2024 edition of the CVRS newsletter "Canadian Vintage Radios" is now available to CVRS members. After signing into the website, you can click on this link to the CURRENT ISSUE where you can download it.
In 2011, the Member States of UNESCO proclaimed February 13 as ‘World Radio Day’ (WRD). This was subsequently adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day. Fittingly, CBC Radio are celebrating WRD in 2024 by dedicating an edition of the ‘SPARK’ radio program to explore the magic behind one of the most important technological creations in history, the innovations it inspired and its enduring power in an increasingly digitized world. This episode will air across Canada on CBC Radio One on Sunday, February 11 at 1 p.m. ET and repeat on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 11 p.m. It's also available on the CBC ‘Listen’ app or anywhere you download your podcasts, or at this link. One segment of this program, (around 18.5 minutes in) has an interview with the CVRS President, Gerry O’Hara, and Bruce Winter, who are both Directors of the SPARC radio museum in Coquitlam, BC. The interview is focused on the SPARC Museum, and the preservation and restoration of vintage radios in Canada.
One of the premium benefits of CVRS membership is receiving five copies of the 20-page ‘Canadian Vintage Radios’. This publication is recognized throughout the vintage radio community worldwide as a constant source of interesting and varied articles covering technical, restoration, historical and human interest articles associated with vintage radio and electronics.
