I ended up with the multiband shortwave receiver GE Model FE-112 that my father received from his grandfather. I stupidly removed the tapped Candohm resistor that shorted to the chassis to try to fix it many years ago and now I can’t find it. I found one post in your forums about replacing it with multiple silicone coated wirewound resistors, but haven’t been able to find those resistors yet. Would like to find the actual part from a radio that has been parted out, or the leaded resistors described in the forum post.

Another possibility is to buy an Ohmite series 210 Dividohm resistor.
You can set the taps where ever you need them .
If the actual value that you need is not available buy one larger and use one tap to make it the correct
value that you need and then put the rest of the taps where ever they are supposed to be for every thing else.
Part of the resistor not being connected because it was not needed is of no matter.

    Hi Rick,

I hope you’re lucky enough to find a donor chassis. There are several ways to recreate a Candohm and this is my preferred. The photos attached are from a Deforest Crosley that I restored a while back. I mounted new wirewound resistors on an aluminum base to try and maintain the dimensions as close as I could to the original Candohm. I see that your schematic provides the resistance values needed. I purchased mine at Digi-Key but Mouser is another good source. Voltage drops are also provided on the schematic to help you choose the correct wattage resistors. Good Luck.

    Hi Jim.

I am really impressed with with your replacement for the Candohm resistor.

I am having a hard time with the resistors, to me it looks like you used holders for each resistor. Or is each reistor a complete unit. Is there a chance you could provide the DigiKey part numbers for what you have used.

I replaced a Candohm resistor years ago but did not do anywhere as neat a job as you have done.

    Hi Bruce,
I just sent a lengthy reply but it disappeared, perhaps due to the hyperlinks I tried to include. I’ll leave those out this time. The replacement consisted of a piece of aluminum strip about 6″ x 1″ x 1/8″. Holes drilled to attach the power resistors. One of the values used was 3300 ohms and that part number was HSA103K3J, photo attached below. Holes also drilled at both ends of the aluminum strip to mount standoffs for about 1/2″ clearance from the chassis. Let me know if any additional info needed.

    Hi Jim
Thank you for your reply it really helped. I must have had my head in the sand as I never saw these aluminium housed resistors before. If I had it would have really helped in more than one of my projects.
    Thank you again.
    Bruce
