I recently acquired a great little 1950’s mains/battery portable. It is Pye Ltd (Cambridge, UK), Model P131MBQ, nicknamed the ‘Attache Case’ for obvious reasons. This set is in exceptional condition and is a good performer considering its simplicity. It covers MW (Broadcast Band) and LW with an internal antenna built into the lid of the set. It has four tubes and a metal rectifier and can operate from either 210 – 250vAC mains or 90v and 7.5v batteries. It could probably do with 3 or 4 capacitors being replaced for long-term reliability but it worked first time when brought up on my variac/115/240v transformer. I am normally attracted by wood-cased sets but on this I just love the solid feel, outer case colours, gold dial/speaker grill and the really shiney chrome panel behind the knobs.
