Have been slowly working on the chassis for a NE model 851-A floor model…This was a hard one to work on since the chassis was so narrow…hard to get at stuff. Pulled the AC transformer and cleaned up the wiring on it since it was crumbling…put in a new tone pot and AC switch…replaced caps of course and quite a few resistors that were high in value…

Also have new speaker socket installed and new panel lamps…tested it with a 6E5 tube and it also sounds pretty good so far…I used 6V6GT tubes in the output stage in place of the 6F6 tubes…

Still have a bit of work to do on final clean up, tube testing, and an alignment…will see how it goes.

P.S. Anyone have any knobs for this model or know what they look like?

All done for now…had to track down an issue with the oscillator and traced it down to a mica cap that was over its specified value by 50% and also had an intermittent internal connection on one end. Aligned the BC band and adjusted the grid bias voltage on the 6V6 tubes ( since this radio originally had 6F6 tubes in the audio output stage ). Also put in a new 6E5 eye tube…this radio chassis works well now and sounds great with lots of volume.

Not a lot of wiggle room in this chassis due to the narrow width…it was really hard to get at some of the components.
Just looking for a set of knobs for this before it goes back into the cabinet…anyone have any ideas?

It has been a while since I have updated this post. The chassis restoration is now included in the Winter 2017 CVRS Newsletter. When I submitted the article the cabinet was not finished yet…so here are two photos of what the finished product looks like…Thanks to my friend Dan in Calgary for a wonderful job on the cabinet restoration.
