Have had this one since 1990…not the best by any means but well built and of high quality. It appears to be all original as well. Looks like it will be easy to work on and align.

Anyone know about C38 which is a gimmick capacitor of 2pf in value in the Hallicrafters S-85? I have seen twisted wires in the past which have about 5 to 8pf in value…this one seems to just be the end of one wire closely coupled along side another wire which may give it a value of about 2pf? This is coupling the BFO oscillator output back to one of the I.F. stages.

No one has worked on this radio in the past to my knowledge and this is how the wire was located when I opened it up.

Finally got around to finishing off this beast…no silver mica issues here on this set…it does not seem to have had many hours on it.

I added a fuse and new power cord plus speaker. The speaker failed I believe due to the heat from the rectifier and audio output tubes basically being directly beneath it. With an indoor wire antenna I was able to grab Radio Australia at 9.580MHz on Monday morning at 9:00AM MST…not too shabby.

I added a note inside the chassis for any future restorer identifying the gimmick capacitor C38…
