Forum ParticipantThe Eddystone EC10 was the most popular receiver Eddystone made and many ended-up in Canada. It filled a unique position in the marketplace in the early/mid-1960’s when it was introduced: a communications-style solid state receiver covering the Broadcast Band and HF bands through to 30MHz, complete with a BFO and audio filter. Construction quality was well up to the usual Eddystone standard, including the famous ‘smoooooth’ flywheel tuning. It is a testament to the radio’s quality that so many survive in almost pristine condition. The main problem that develops with age is that the early germanium transistors grow ‘whiskers’ inside their cans that eventually short out the transistor elements to the metal can encapsulation. This phenomenon is quite well documented on the web and affects the OC171 transistor types mainly in the RF, Mixer, Local Oscillator and IF stages. Other age-related problems are that some resistors drift and become noisy and electrolytics dry out. Of course not all sets are perfect cosmetically after 45 years of so, and there may be a need for some re-painting and mechanical work.
I restored an EC10 earlier this year and an article dealing with this popular receiver can be downloaded from the Eddystone User Group website (https://eddystoneusergroup.org.uk/) under the ‘Restorations Projects’ section.
