    Built this weekend for slowly bringing up radios with AC/DC power supply inputs.

    Gerry;
    Great job. A variac is a must.
    I would suggest a minor modification / addition.
    You might want to consider adding a 110 / 220 volt transformer such as those found in 50 watt European adaters, a bridge rectifier, 400 volt filter cap, and suitable resistor, you would have a built in source for reforming electrolytic caps , variable from 0 to some about 400 volts or so or a low power ( 50 watt ) high voltage DC supply.

    Hi John:

    I actually have a circuit capable of producing 0 – 1000 VDC so that could be modified as a reformer to test capacitors up to 630 VDC. It needs some tweaks and additions since I got it off the Internet – I find a lot of schematics on the ‘net nowadays give the appearance of having been tested by their authors but that is not always the case. Hence I do a lot of breadboarding and experimenting before I publish anything so no one has to go through the frustrations I encounter!

    Metering on all my projects is a must so you don’t end up having to buy several meters and the eventual rat’s nest of wires to go with them. The meter I added was not cheap but it works very well – and my nibbler tool got a work out making the rectangular cutout to fit it. Thank goodness for AutoCAD drafting where you can get hole alignments to 0.001″!

    So stay tuned for further stuff to make their way off my work bench.

    Cheers and thanks,

    Gerry, VE6BLI
