I have this Canadian General Electric C544 radio to restore but have a problem with the dirty grill. It appears to be something similar to Bakelite so I don’t know what to clean it with. Soap and water didn’t work. Would a jewelry cleaner be safe?

The grille looks like the best part of the radio. Have you disassembled the radio? Can you not separate the cloth from the grille itself. Would be a lot easier to clean it that way no matter what you use.

Its not actually cloth, it is the same composite material as the grill and part of it. I tried Simple Green and even lacquer thinner on a corner with no luck. I’m going to paint it with some Testor’s gold, just a light spray. Thanks for your response.

    HI all,

Go to Home Hardware and buy a small can of Toluene. It will clean just about anything.

Try it sparingly on a part of the grill assembly that you can not see.

Check it out on the internet if you want more info.
