I am recapping a Rogers Champlain with a 10-10 chassis and I see on the plastic dial there is a hole
below the tuning light . It is sort of two round half circles that overlap. Above this opening is the word vernier. There is nothing behind the hole.
.The gear assembly that you see rotates as the dial is turned and so does the diffuser [small clear plastic] for the tuning light,
I don’t see any reason for the diffused to turn but it does. There is no bulb behind the open space that you can see in the center..
I have nor seem anything like this on any rogers radio and I hope some one can tell me how it works..
    thanks Dan in Calgary

Is it for the band indicator on the dial? That is, is the diffuser solid or does it have spaces on it that would “match” the lights on the bottom of the dial?

If you look at the middle photo you can see the bulb just behind the band indicator wheel [which has three curved clear parts that the light shines through.. Right above that is where the triangle is .. From the first photo,,,, [showing the dial], the opening of the two half circles overlapping sits right in front of the triangle..
I will show some more photos. sometimes it is harder to say in words so here are some more photos

Ok, now I understand; I wasn’t sure what the actual question was! Is it just a place for a missing lens or crystal?

It looks like there should have been some sort of lens or something over the opening but there is no indication that anything was ever there. There are no marks or scratches around the hole from anything ever being there..
If I could see a photo of the dial of a Champlain radio then I might get an idea of what should be there.. if not I probably will put a colored gell behind the opening.. I still have not found out the reason the geared wheel is there..
I guess I will keep looking ..thanks for the interest…Dan in Calgary

I don’t know enough about Vernier dials, but it may be part of the way it prevents mechanical backlash ie the tuning “drifting back” after you tune a station in.

Have you looked for the Montcalm (the console version) on line?
