One thing I wish they had done is make those side panels to open, maybe slide up so people could view the power amp at work. </p>

The 1st thing to do is to decide if you can solder new capacitors in place of the old ones which have dried out or become leaky. Don&#8217;t power the unit up anymore until this is done, and check the fuse, should be rated for no more than about 1 amp.</p>

Ken is the tech there. Information on German radios can be difficult to locate though.<br />
He can give you an idea on what it may cost.</p>

									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I picked up this model radio today.  It will need a dial belt and a total recap. with a new 6X5 GT tube or a 6X5WGT tube.<br />
The cabinet is good except for a few joints that are coming apart.<br />
We don&#8217;t get many Zenith consoles here in Alberta so this one is a rarity for me.<br />
   There is lots of room under the chassis.<br />

Model 53-D is not it, but has s similar chassis, has the power transformer farther forward. Tube lineup is all 6 volt heater filaments, two 6BA6, 6BE6, 6AT6, 6AQ6 and 6X4, those are the two tall tubes in yours. Something I&#8217;ll add for future readers of these forums, is that a tube amp should always work into a load. You must always have a speaker or dummy load connected to the secondary winding of the output transformer. If not, it may self destruct.<br />
Could be what happened here, almost.</p>

I&#8217;ll check out the temperatures as you suggest.<br />
Someone had added an audio jack wiring it to the speaker terminals so I&#8217;ll check that our for shorts.</p>

I would suggest if the capacitors in the metal cans are original, it may be time to replace them. If there is a short circuit in one of them, excess current could cause overheating.<br />

There are speaker connections for 8Ω 16Ω and 32Ω. When I test the resistance of the windings on each transformer they are identical so that&#8217;s the good news.
