March 7, 2016 at 2:36 pm #7518philForum ParticipantI htink there were a few variations. Im not up on the part numbers. i think I have at least a couple of the rainbow models. If anyone needs to restore one that is missing the little propeller which was used on only certain ones I have a bunch of them . most of the ones i have seen , maybe canadian models have a pointer not the propeller. I think I have some of the needles used for other baby champs they are a bright red plastic.
the ones that were painted came with white knobs so you could probably choose to paint those ones to match one of the suitable colors. the brown ones with brown knobs were not painted.
also this case was used in some desktop intercoms. I think I have a couple that were the slave station and one that was the master station. they look similar to the radio but there is a paddle switch to press when you talk.
I do believe there was also a battery set that used this case as I remember one being sold and remarking that it was a good price but then learned that the price included a power supply to run it.
I don’t know if I have a broken cased one with a good chassis but i could keep an eye open or look around a bit. Ill reply back to the thread if I find one that’s broken or something. it’s not a particularly rare radio but they do have an attractive case design.
what’s with yours? is it rusty? some of these might be prone to the silver mica disease in the IF transformers?
PhilMarch 8, 2016 at 7:52 am #7521David SharpeForum ParticipantHi Phil.I am looking for parts for a Northern Electric 5000.I have one that I can’t get working. If you have a non working 5000 that you could sell me for parts that would be great. They made small changes to almost every model they made so I would like to stick to the 5000 if I could.
March 11, 2016 at 12:17 pm #7547philForum Participantwithout going through schematics I am assuming the 5000 is the three knob version. It probably had tone control wheras the lesser models didn’t. I have seen quite a few of the models with two knobs in the rainbow case. the name “baby champ seems to appear on some of these plus other northern electric radios.
here is a picture of the 5000 with three knobs.
https://www.eclectisaurus.com/rmnorthernelectric.htmlIf you are stuck, sometimes it does help to acquire a similar radio to swap parts from or to crosscheck components and voltages and things. I am sure I don’t’ have the three knob version and that’s probably what differentiates the 5000 with the other more common models. I noticed the above radio has the “propeller” and most of the others I have seen have the pointer not the propeller.

what your are showing there is a 5002 wich has a shortwave band. The middle knob is the band switch. There are four different radio chassis in the rainbow cabinet :
model 5000 – the basic AM only radio. Only two knobs and the propeller type dial.
model 5002 – same as above but with shortwave band. Three knobs an propeller type dial.
model 5110 – Am only. May or maynot have a tone control (two position switch). Two or three knobs and the wiper type dial.
model B4000 – Battery version of the 5000. Two knobs and propeller type dial. All four models have a different dial. Some models have a loop antenna at the back. Some others have a spool of wire as antenna and these sets have an antenna coil on the chassis. The mounting of the variable condenser varies according to the type of dial indicator.
In the picture : bottom left a 5000, on top of it a 5110. Bottom right the B4000 and on top a 5002.

March 12, 2016 at 3:47 pm #7552David SharpeForum ParticipantThat would be correct. Each model was different with minor variations.Just enough so the parts don’t really interchange.I have the model 5000.
