I’m currently restoring a 1940’s Northern Electric radio, model 651. When I received it, there was no board at the back of the radio: both the amplifier and the speaker were exposed. See attached picture — amplifier is missing since it is being overhauled 8-). I thought of screwing in a board of masonite with ventilation holes at the top for the amplifier, to cover the entire backside. However upon closer examination, I see what appear to be original screw holes in the cabinet around the lower section ONLY — that is behind the speaker area. There are no holes in the cabinet wood around the upper section, where the amplifier resides! Does this mean that these cabinets only had their lower (speaker) section covered at the back and NOT the upper (amplifier) section which was therefore fully exposed? Any insight would be much appreciated.
