Hello everyone. I am a new member and this is my first visit to the forum. No doubt this topic has been discussed before, but I am restoring a G500/540 Trans-oceanic and have read various opinions about using the 1R5 as a substitute for the 1L6. Fortunately the 1L6 is good in the set, but thought I would experiment with a few 1R5s I have on hand. Surprisingly, the set worked with no discernable loss of sensitivity on all bands. Jack

Don’t take it as gospel but I have read various threads in the past and I think it will work fine on AM but there might be some very slight issues with allignment on shortwave bands.

There isn’t much on short wave and what is there can still be found it might be a tiny bit off it’s frequency as per the dial scale. ( ok some might have a favorite short wave station but from what I have found it is fun to see what I can get but I don’t spend a lot of time listening to short wave)

I have heard of others using the 1R5 while they are working on the set to avoid damaging the expensive 1L6.

If you are planning to allign the set it might be worth trying to use the same tube for allignment that you plan to leave in the set after restoration.

    Phil
