Sounds like fun and games with the Stromberg Carlson 694 Eric! I like the glass marble idea in place of a Magic Eye (glass eye I guess…) – not! what were they thinking? I will bear the 911 idea in mind for my next really difficult case.
Phil makes some good points – though maybe I am not as ‘purist’. I only stuff caps for more ‘special’ radios or if someone I am restoring it for, eg. a SPARC customer, requests it specifically (not very often in my book – I can recall a Philco and a Radiola III where this was agreed with the customer after I discussed it with them. In some cases its not such a big deal, but in others it can be a real pain.
