lots of knobs have a very small piece of springy
sheet metal that is easily lost and results in that issue. Im not sure if those knobs used one but maybe?
dryness wont’ affec the fit, they are both metal parts.
its very hard to make two metal parts that fit over each other tight enough to hold and loose enough that you can pull the knobs without setscrews. if the knob was a stretchy material like soft plastic then they might have enough give to have that sort of friction fit but those are metal knobs. the purpose of the little metal tab is so they have some “give” you need the springyness so the knob can be pushed on or pulled off with considerable force. Im wondering if you just lost a little bit from inside the knob and didn’t notice it falling. If it has them they are just little pieces about 3/16″ square. I think I have seen others that are sort of an L shape but still tiny and easy to loose. if you think that could be the case you might find them around your bench. im not near a radio at the moment but someone could check if crosley seemed to use these little metal springs. I think I have seen some that are sort of bent to fit around the inner part of the knob and then across the hole so they fit into the slot in the slotted type of shafts. sort of a G shape
If you understand what I mean Ill stop there but if my explanation doesn’t make sense then perhaps a picture of other knobs that use them would help. If thats the case you can make some from some thin springy metal, maybe a bit cut from a feeler gauge maybe .010″ thick or thereabouts? you can cut that spring steel with a dremil with a little cut disc if you have a dremil.
